Executions in 2018: min. 690 plus 'thousands' in China

Is the death penalty cheaper than imprisonment?

Quotes from letters:

........do you want to feed them for a life time........
........I certainly don’t pay taxes so that one of them will have a roof over their head and get 3 meals a day for the rest of their life........

Apart from the fact that the cost argument in itself is inhuman, it is also factually incorrect.

In the US the costs for an execution are considerably higher than the costs of life imprisonment. In Texas for example, a death sentence costs in average $2.3 million. – More than triple as high as in the case were an accused is held for 40 years in solitary confinement under maximum security. (Exact figures are available at the website of the Death Penalty Information Center here.) The reasons amongst others are two separate trials, one for guilt and one for sentencing, the complex nature of death penalty trials for both the proscecutor and the defense attorney, and  the complex and extended appeal proceedings, that are necessary to prevent someone innocent from sentenced to death or subject to execution.

There are still 58 countries and territories which keep capital punishment in their law and carried out executions in the past 10 years, among these countries are also the USA and Japan.
